The idea of these leads are that they are basically a ’Feederless Feeder’. Simply slide a small PVA bag under the elasticated strap and position your hookbait right on top by nicking the hook into the bag.

Now just think of the advantages over a conventional flat feeder.

Info:
Your feeder and hookbait are guaranteed to stay on the feeder. They’re not lost during casting, or on impact, or as the feeder sinks, and if you miscast you can reel in and try again without spreading feed everywhere!

Once in the water your bag will burst open in 1-5 minutes depending on the type of PVA bags you’ve chosen and water temperature. The bags contents will then cover the lead in a small pile with the hook right in amongst it.

This is the ultimate fish trap!

The bags can be filled with any feed as long as it’s PVA friendly and not too wet.

For example:

Maggots - Live or dead.
Cereal - Groundbait including fishmeal.
Boilies - Whole or crushed.
Meat - Cubed or grated.
Bread

And of course Pellets, even softened ones as long as they’re soaked then left to swell up and dry a little. The list of possibilities is endless, this is not possible with a normal flat feeder. These bags can be made up in advance or made on the bank as and when you need them. The leads cast beautifully because of the teardrop shape and are inline and fishery safe.

Marukyu hit the UK market with a storm when they launched their range of scientifically designed baits, and anglers are always looking for that next edge, and it looks as if Marukyu are about to do the same all over again with their new JPz hook pellets.

After 19 years of researching different baits, a team of scientists employed by Marukyu have finalised what they describe to be "a truely massive innovation in fishing bait technology". The idea started as a vision by the highly skilled team of Marukyu technologists. Once they reached satisfaction with the science behind the bait, further painstaking research and development with local Marukyu Pro Staff was conducted to ensure that JPz pellets were perfect in real fishing situations.

The exact science behind the baits is a closely guarded secret at Marukyu, but in simple terms, JPz have been formulated to ensure that the proteins and amino acids within the bait work together to attract fish, stimulate feeding and have the fish returning back for more. The sophisticated recipe of the bait is designed to release key feeding triggers into the water. Marukyu have decided to initially release the JPz in one size and flavour, but as they can be cut down to size, simply snipping a pellet in half with a pair of scissors gives two smaller alternative hookbaits with no wastage. The initial JPz are 6mm in diameter and contain a naturally salty formulation called Ebi which is composed from multiple ingredients in cluding huge numbers of minute marine crustaceans that have been found to be extremely attractive to freshwater fish. The Ebi JPz are packaged in 50g resealable pots to ensure that the hookbaits can be used economically, retain long term effectiveness and also guarantee freshness. Marukyu are formulating other flavours in the JPz range and UKMA will be taking a good look at them once they are released.

A Use a long, body-down pole float for this style of fishing. One having a long plastic bristle is perfect as bite registration will be near instant.

B Cock the float with an olivette or bulk shot. This needs to be positioned around 12in from the hook.

C Place two dropper shot equally spaced between the olivette and the hook. Ideally they should be No10 shot that are light enough to create a gentle and natural fall of the bait through the final few inches of water.

D The hookbait should be set so that it just touches the bottom, so accurate plumbing is vital with this rig.

E The best way to tempt extra bites with this rig is to loosefeed little and often with sinking pellets, then lift and lower your rig regualrly. This gives the expander pellet plenty of movement, and the simple waft of the bait dropping down to the bottom can bring a bite when a static bait is often ignored.

Well what can i say about this groundbait apart from its probably one of the best i have ever used. Its absolutly deadly on commercial waters especially when used in conjuction with Krilled maggots either in an open ended feeder or in the margins during the warmer months. Coastal catch report for September

Gorleston Pier has been the most productive mark in the area over the last few weeks thanks to the good numbers of whiting
that are being caught. There have also been a few early codling showing, and their numbers are likely to increase in the coming weeks.
Tactics: Lugworm is the best bait and this should be fished on a three-hook flapper rig with a size 1/0 hook. The end of the pier is a good area to head to, and if you’re fishing from here you’ll only need to cast 20yds to 30yds. Bites have been hard to come by during the day, but once the sun sets the sport can be frantic, especially if you fish on a flood tide. There is free parking available next to the pier.

Drennan Team England win gold and silver at the European Championships in Portugal

Drennan Team England returned from Portugal medal-laden adding team silver to the World Champs gold they picked up in July and two individual medals with Alan Scotthorne being crowned World Champion and William Raison taking silver.

The team got to grips with the river, which has been a bit of a graveyard for England teams in recent years, losing out only to home side Portugal by just two points after winning Day 1. They scored even heavier on Day 2, only to see the Portuguese turn in an even better score to snatch gold.

Not that anyone was complaining. In fact, England could have been champions by four clear points if the much-maligned split section system had been in operation, this match reverting to the one big section format ¬ swings and roundabouts as manager Mark Downes put it.

“I said we needed to beat Portugal and Italy to win gold and we’ve stuffed Italy out of sight which has been brilliant for the team, but Portugal are just so hard to beat on home soil. I’ve been to Portugal nine times now and I think Portugal have won seven of those events. They never win a medal outside of their country!” England had the method to catch the small barbel sorted, fishing mainly wagglers just past midway of the river along with a little long pole work, single maggot fished up to 5ft overdepth in 12ft of water on light tackle and size 24 hooks working well over loosefed stickymag being the order of the day. An 18-point score on Day 1 saw England take the lead, 14 on Day 2 usually enough to seal gold but for Portugal’s stunning 10-point return.

“The performances this weekend have been just incredible,” Mark continued.
“Alan and William both won their sections and there wasn’t anybody to stop them,

William standing out on day two with a 4kg weight from a section where no one had caught more than 2kg in practice or on Saturday while Steve Gardener did much the same from a poor peg in A section. Alan was his usual awesome self and when he drew the end peg in E section on Day 2 where the big fish were and it was effectively all over - he made no mistake!”

World carp championships come to England

Linear Fisheries at Witney, Oxfordshire is hosting FIPSed 12th World Carp Championships from 7th –10th October 2010, with 20 nations taking part in this very prestigious event.

This year there has been a change to the England team with Ian Russel and Brian Jarrett (Pairs) joining the existing line up of Andrew and Tom Maker (Pairs) and Jamie Londers and Billy Flowers (Pairs).

The England Carp team will be working hard to compete for the World Championship title this year with a very strong group of competitive carping pairs on home soil. South Africa took team gold medals in 2008 and 2009, and unfortunately Jamie Londers and Billy Flowers (Pairs), England Carp team just missed out last year and had to settle for silver medals with 73.190kgs (B section winners).

The 20 nations taking part this year are; Belgium, Bosnia & Herzegovnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, England, France, Greece, Italy, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain and the Ukraine.
Linear’s waters have been chosen for this superb event and a lot of work has been incorporated with the fishery to be able to host this World Championship. Angling Trust would like to thank Len Gurd, Roy Parsons and Chris Blunt for all their support and help in the build up to the Championship.

The event is open for all spectators to come along, free and watch this prestigious event between Thursday 7th October and Sunday 10th October. It’s a one off chance to see some of the best international pairs carp anglers from around the world in a merit selection event.

The schoolie bass are still providing anglers with some good sport at Gorleston pier.
Tactics: There’s no need for long-range tactics at this venue because most fish are being caught close to the pier. You can catch on both spinning tactics and with ragworms on 3/0 Pennell rigs. Last light is a good time to be out fishing and there is plenty of parking available at the pier.

Suffolk

Good numbers of soles and bass are being reported by anglers fishing at Aldeburgh.
Tactics: There’s no need to cast to the horizon here, and you can catch from as close in as 25yds. If you are targeting soles, scale down the size of your hooks and use lugworms or ragworms as bait. These will also score for the bass, but use slightly larger hooks. Evening is the best time.

How to get the best from EFG 100

EFG 100 is a very versatile groundbait. It can be used as a method mix, an exploding feeder groundbait, and a paste and is perfect for balling.
An all temperature bait but best results when the water is warmer than 8C.

Norfolk

There are lots of bass being reported from anglers fishing at Caister beach, with the biggest reaching the 5lb mark.
Tactics: The bass can be caught close in with fresh lugworms or ragworms on a three-hook rig with size 1 hooks. There are also a few smoothhounds being taken by those fishing at range with crabs on a Pennell rig. A flood tide is preferable, and the best catches have come during the evening once the light is off the water. There is lots of parking close to the fishing.

The sole are now starting to show in good numbers off Dunwich beach, and there are also lots of bass to be had averaging 1lb-2lb.
Tactics: Ragworms are pretty much the only bait you need to catch at this venue and it only needs to be cast around 20yds-30yds. It doesn¹t matter too much which tide you fish, but the evening is by far the most productive time of the day. There is plenty of free parking available close by.

The Sun. The good old currant bun. Home of page three, puns and some of the most humorous – and memorable – headlines in history. ‘Gotcha’, ‘Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster’, ‘Up Yours Delors’ and, my personal No1, ‘It’s Paddy Pantsdown’ being among the more quotable.

Yes, our favourite daily newspaper – read by 2.9 million – is the populist prince of print, the red-top super heavyweight that’s become a modern day icon. And, last week, it was also guilty of some of the worst journalism I have ever had the misfortune to read.

Now, I know, like ex-professional footballers who comment on the current crop, criticising someone in your own game is tantamount to treason, but there are some stories so ridiculous, so flawed and so potentially damaging, they are immune from the normal insurance of self-imposed silence. Like the story entitled ‘Killer Piranha in Folkestone Pond’ that appeared in The Sun’s June 17 edition.

If there has been a more misleading and misinformed article masquerading as news then I have yet to see it. Fairytales are more believable.

For those left in any doubt by the screaming headline as to what the ensuing words described, let me explain. Basically an ‘angler’ claimed to have caught a piranha while fishing Radnor Park in Kent.

On the face of it, there doesn’t appear to be much of an issue. Should a piranha, with all its over-inflated Hollywood-fuelled reputation for menace in tow, be caught thousands of miles from its Amazon home

in a lake somewhere in Folkestone, I can see the news value. If it were true, it would deserve its place as lead story on page 11 in Britain’s best-selling newspaper. The trouble is, it wasn’t. Remotely.

Let’s start with the ‘piranha’, that fearsome creature which, to quote the story, ‘can strip the flesh of a human in seconds’. This will be the same ‘piranha’ that was actually a red-bellied pacu, a fish that’s completely harmless, unless you happen to be a piece of fruit, that is.

And what of the rest of this tall tale of fiction? What about the quotes attributed to the angler, Derek Plum?

“It dragged my line about 500 yards,” he alleged. On a lake no bigger than 100 yards by 80 yards? Unless the thing was on steroids and did five laps, the figures don’t add up.

“It took me about 15 minutes to reel it in,” he added. At 1lb 4oz? What was on his reel? Cotton?

“When it emerged it was thrashing around and going crazy,” he continued. This a fish that normally lives in water temperatures of 27ºC to 30ºC and can’t, according to those who know, survive in the cold waters of a pond in Kent.

The Sun even wheeled out an ‘expert’ to validate this work of fiction. It would be unfair to name names, but the Angler’s Mail journalist in question needs a crash course in fish identification if he thinks a pacu is a piranha. I can almost feel the warmth of his embarrassment from here.

There is, of course, a wider point at issue here. National newspapers – and The Sun is by no means alone – have a sickeningly patronising view of fishing, only reporting on the outlandish, the crazy and the freakish elements of the sport. Ordinarily fishing is too dull to be newsworthy, occasionally appearing on the radar when it ticks certain boxes like fear, wackiness or unbelievable size.

I’m not naïve. I know all of that. But when papers like The Sun print this nonsense, it is taken as fact. Just like the way it reported the recent death of Heather the Leather, claiming it had been caught more than 1,000 times rather than the 40 to 60 that is reality, the unquestioning masses have no reason to doubt what they read.

And not only is that irresponsible, it’s dangerous too. We have enough battles to fight without the national press misrepresenting us so flagrantly.

Angling’s millions surely deserve better – and until they get it I’d suggest they look elsewhere for their daily fix of news.

Lots of bites are virtually guaranteed at Gorleston wreck, thanks to the multitude of species present including bass, whiting, flatfish, dabs and dogfish.
Tactics: Keep things simple – a two-hook paternoster baited with lugworms and ragworms will be fine. Most anglers fishing here use two rods – one close in and one at 100yds-plus where the bigger fish are often found. Fish the tide four hours up and two back down. There is lots of free parking close by.

Big cod are being caught on a regular basis at the popular mark known as the Dirty Wall, with the fish averaging 6lb although a few around the 10lb mark have been reported.
Tactics: Distance is essential at this venue and you’ll struggle to catch unless you can find the deeper water at 120yds. Lugworm or peeler crab on a single hook clipped-down pennel rig is recommended. Day or night isn’t making any difference, but you want to fish a spring tide on the flood.

Hugh Miles and Martin Bowler have finally sealed a deal to get their critically-acclaimed Catching the Impossible series shown on terrestrial TV.

Channel 4 has bought the licence to the eight-part show, which follows AT columnist Martin and well-known actor Bernard Cribbins as they travel the country in pursuit of impossibly big fish.

Each of the hour-long programmes will go out at 7am on Sunday mornings starting from June 13 and, if enough viewers tune in, Channel 4 could re-run the series in a prime time slot at a later date.

“To have the opportunity to raise the profile of angling is terrific and right from the outset that was always the goal. The aim was to get on to terrestrial television and now we’ve got it, we need good audience figures.

If we do, it might encourage others to make fishing programmes for TV,” said Hugh.

“It’s been a long journey and we’ve had to jump through a lot of hoops along the way, but I never gave up. We got close with BBC4 and then ITV, before finally getting the okay from Channel 4. For a quiet and unfashionable sport like angling to make the schedules, where the main stars are the fish and the countryside, is amazing,” he added.

AT columnist Martin Bowler was equally excited by the news, insisting that getting on mainstream TV would be the highlight of an already exceptional angling career.
“The biggest ‘impossible’ wasn’t catching the fish, it was getting the programme on terrestrial.

“The main aim was always to showcase how special and amazing our fish and fisheries are and to share them with the wider public. Yes, it’s great news for the sport of angling, but personally I hope it proves even better news for the fish and goes some way to helping improve their protection.” Legendary TV personality Bernard Cribbins, who provided the commentary on Hugh’s earlier award-winning angling series A Passion For Angling, joined in the celebrations.

“It’s fantastic news. Fishing with Martin was a great experience and I was delighted to have the opportunity to work with Hugh again. I caught my best-ever pike, landed my biggest carp and got loads of stick for my ancient Mitchell 300s.”

If you fish a flapper rig with small hooks and worm baits you’ll catch lots of flatfish, and the odd cod are also being caught along this stretch of the coast. The local anglers advise you to use small hooks and worm baits on an incoming tide.
Tactics: Those who have been fishing for cod have been fishing as far as they can.

Corton, Near Lowestoft, Suffolk

There are signs that there will soon be a good run of cod as a few small ones are now starting to make an appearance. There’s plenty of parking by the beach.
Tactics: Plenty of whiting and most of the fish have been caught fishing at about 60 yards. Flapper rigs baited with black lugworms are the best tactics, and you should look to fish around the flood tides.

Environment Agency publish rod fishing licence costs for 2010

The Environment Agency today announced that another £25 million from anglers’ licences will be ploughed back into improving fisheries this year.

Last year sales of rod licences broke records and similar sales are expected in 2010. All money raised by rod licence sales goes straight back into the sport.

This enables the Environment Agency to carry out work such as habitat improvement, monitoring of fish stocks, restocking and fish rescues – vital when angling is becoming more popular every year.

Licence funds are also used to help people take up fishing.

Anglers fishing in England and Wales must hold a valid rod licence.

The new licence year starts on April 1, and rod licences for the 2010/11 season are available now.

The attractive credit card-style licences show pictures by celebrated Wales-based wildlife artist David Miller, and this year feature either a barbel or a sea trout.
